Making an Emergency Survival Kit

Everyone needs an emergency survival kit. We never know when an emergency may cause us to lose our electricity, or any other disaster may cause us to need emergency supplies.

You will need a large waterproof box for your survival kits. Base the amount of supplies you put in it by the number of people you think will be depending on the kit for survival.

For each person there should be about a gallon of water per day for cooking, drinking and personal care. There should be enough supplies to last for three days. You can buy gallons of water, which should have a life expectancy of several months.

Canned or dry food with a long expiration date, so you don’t have to replace them too often. Fruits and vegetables in cans, canned meat, energy bars. Make sure to put in a small can opener if the cans don’t have pull tops. Don’t forget Fido or Kitty. Throw in a little food for them too.

You will need a cooking pot for sanitizing water. There are small propane stoves that backpackers use, which you can use for this purpose and cooking any food that might need it. Gotta have that coffee! Paper, plates, utensils, and cups plus paper towels are useful items. You can always burn them for heat if you get desperate!

A portable radio is very handy to hear about the weather conditions, especially if you
have no other communication. Remember to put in extra batteries.
For light, you need some candles and/or flashlights, more extra batteries. Kids don’t like the dark! Don’t forget the matches, preferably waterproof matches!

A first aid kit is a necessity. It should consist of band-aid, tweezers, gauze and tape, antibiotic ointment, antiseptic wipes, and travel sizes of your favorite pain reliever. You may have to change some of these items out from time to time, so you should keep them together where they are easy to get to.

So many people take prescription drugs, that you need to at least keep a list of them and their doses in your survival kit. You could even keep a few of each one in your survival kit, if you change them every two or three months.

Children need extra attention. They need something to keep them busy. You can include toys, games, cards, some books and other items that keep them busy.

Then there needs to be a couple of blankets, some rope and duct tape, and a tarp for shelter.
Are you wondering about the whistle? A whistle or high-pitched device is very handy if you need to alert someone to your location.

Sometimes you don’t have any warning to natural disasters and there is not much you can do to protect yourself. You need to have your survival kit stored where you can stay close to it, if you do have advance warning. When I hear a severe storm or tornado warning, I get my purse, my cell phone, my keys, my husband’s wallet and any extra money we have laying around and stuff my purse. I try to keep my purse close to me, in case I have to take shelter suddenly. Then I make sure I am dressed, I tell my husband that I don’t want to be in my nighty and get blown out in the yard and can’t find anything to put on!

Do Your Children Get Bored Easily?

When children are confined to the house or sometimes just can’t seem to find anything to do their favorite saying is "I’m bored." Finding them something to do can be quite simple. Kids love a big cardboard box with windows and a door cut in it. It makes a house or a fort or whatever their imagination can think up. A simple tent built from sheets hung over backs of dining room chairs makes a great place to play. More than one child could have two tents so they can play in both of them.

If you have the time to entertain the children, most of them love to help cook. There are lots of different kinds of food they can help you cook but cookies are probably the favorite. Cookies can be made and each child can decorate their cookies to suit their imagination. If the child is very carefully supervised, they can flip pancakes or French Toast. These things not only entertain a child, but they educate the child, too.

There are many craft projects that you can start the children on at the kitchen table where you can keep an eye on them and help when they need it. Keep a supply of paper, glue, safe scissors, and color crayons or colored pens on hand to be ready when you need them. Stimulate their imagination with some of the new type of coloring pencils and pens available. A lot of crafts can be made from junk items that you have laying around. Save some of your plastic containers, small boxes and even tin cans. Make sure if you use tin cans you flatten any sharp edges with a pair of pliers.

You can teach them to make wind spinners and wind chimes. They can be made out of just about any thing you can tie on a string. Jar lids can be used for tops for wind spinners and chimes. An adult will have to punch the holes in the lid and make sure there are no sharp edges, but the children can put the strings in and tie the object on it. Plastic containers like the small ones for yogurt and butter can be used as tops. Just punch holes around the lip and tie on any small objects. Metal objects can clink against each other and make a pleasant sound. Old keys work well for the hanging items. A fishing line swivel should be fastened to the string above the plastic container. Then another string or hook should be fastened to that to hang it by, so it will turn in the wind. It makes children happy to see the product of their work.

Teach the children to make a collage. When they are in the yard or park, encourage them to pick up different items to put in their collage. Feathers, leaves or any other interesting items they may find will work well for a collage. A collage can be made from old buttons, beans, popsicle sticks or just from magazine pictures. Whatever catches their interest. They can cut letters from newspapers and magazines and spell their name or make a message. Have the children save everyday items to make a collage. Use a stiff piece of paper or card stock for the collage.

Sometimes items you buy are packed in a box with Styrofoam packing. A piece of Styrofoam that is at least 2 inches, by 3 inches by 6 inches makes a good substitute wood block. Under strict supervision, a child can take a tack hammer and drive nails in the block, or use a screw driver to drive screws in the block.. The child should be at least five years old. If Dad is a do-it-yourself person, children like to imitate him and the Styrofoam block works good for this.

There are all kinds of crafts on the Internet that are geared for children. If your children get bored easily, it is of great benefit to look some of these things up for future use. Some sites have patterns that you can print out with the instructions. An hour or so on the computer can be very beneficial. Making crafts with your children creates a good bonding time. Even if you have them sit at the table where you can see them while you cook a meal and offer suggestions and praise it will cause a lot of interaction with your children.

How to Enjoy Your Work Day

Do you enjoy your work day or do you dread going to work in the mornings? Do you dislike your present job? The weekend can’t get here fast enough? If all these things apply to you then maybe you need to learn how to be happy at work. Here are a few simple steps to help you through the day and to enjoy your job more.

1. Make sure you take a few minutes for yourself before you leave for work. Don’t jump out of bed just in time to hurry through getting the kids off to school and the husband off to work. Try to make a little time for you to adjust to the day.

2. Take a hot shower and dress for success. When you know that you look good, you will have a better outlook on life.

3. Have your day planned. Even when your job is very mundane, like assembly line, etc do a good job!

4. Play some of your favorite soothing music on the way to work to help you be calm and collected when you arrive.

5. Arrive at work early. When you have to rush to get to work it makes you nervous and upset before you arrive. Don’t start the day in a bad mood.

6. Say hello to everyone you meet, especially those with whom you work. Greet everyone with a smile and a good morning. Most of your greetings and smiles will be returned. It will, also, give a lift to others who are having a bad day.

7. Be thankful every day that you have a job and do your best at what you do. Thousands of people today would be delighted to have your job or any job for that matter!

8. Try to avoid negative situations. Especially people who always have a negative attitude. Avoid gossip and idle rumors, they only cause suspicion and mistrust in others.

9. Treat everyone with respect, it brings out the best in people. Sometimes a simple thank you or a good job can make the day go a lot better.

10. If you have to open mail and/or email, discard the junk mail immediately! Some people think they have to send you jokes in your email every day. Ask them to send those emails to your home. All personal email should go to your home computer unless it is an emergency.

11. Give every day your best! You may want to find another job and you will need your employer to give you a good reference. If you have done a good job for this employer, he will make sure the next one knows that you are a good employee.

It will take you awhile to do all these things, if you have not been used to doing them already. You may need to take one step at a time. Try getting up earlier and having a good attitude before you go to work then work the rest of the steps into your day. You will be surprised at how soon you can adjust to being a happier person at work and at home!

Is it Safe to Throw Your Old Hard Drive Away?

As criminals rely more and more on computers, government agencies have found it increasingly necessary to be able to recover information on the old hard drives of confiscated computers. There are teams of FBI forensic experts who have digital tools to recover this information.

When a file is put into the trash or recycle bin on your computer, it does not really disappear from your storage device. Your operating system can’t find it any more but it is still on the hard drive.

There is a technique called "scrubbing" which causes the data on the hard drive to be written over several times and tries to make it impossible to read. But if the file isn’t written over enough times, there are forensic tools that can even recover the data after the scrubbing.

People who steal your identity know that most of us do not know how to completely eliminate the data on our hard drives. These thieves can steal your identity from your old thrown away computers.

You can delete your files and empty the Recycle Bin but that does not permanently remove your information. You can reformat your drive, but that does not erase all your data either.

The best way to completely remove the data from your drive is to write over it with other information. Do you remember the old cassette tapes that are rarely used today? When we wanted to erase them, we used a magnetic tape eraser and erased the data or music on the tape and then it was empty. Then came the video cassettes. The only way to erase them was to record over the information on the tape. The same is true of a hard drive. The data has to be written over. There are several programs available that can overwrite your drive effectively. They can be found with the search program on the Internet.

If you want to erase all the data, you need to use a wipe program. It will clean up the drive and free up hard drive space. These programs write over your information with characters that will make the information on the hard drive very hard to recover. These programs are also called shredders. There are shredder programs that you can install on your computer that you can use to shred any files you delete as you delete them. Then if you ever decide to clean the hard drive a lot of the data will already be covered up.

We need to do everything we can to protect our identity from identity thieves. Making sure no one can read the information an old hard drive is one effective way of protecting your identity.

Meth Labs: Cleaning a Former Meth Lab House

Toxins from meth labs are dangerous long after the lab has been removed. The toxins that are released while the drug is being made can linger in walls, fabrics, dishes and any other porous surfaces. There are so many labs across the country that more and more homes are being infested with these toxins.

Not all homes that have been used for meth manufacturing have been reported. The only ones that are reported are the ones the police have closed down. A lot of meth labs are never discovered. If you suspect your home was a meth lab you can have it tested for dangerous toxins.

There are companies who specialize in the cleanup procedure. You can probably find one through your local police department.

If the contamination is confined to certain parts of the property or house, the cleanup may be necessary in that area alone. Other parts of the house may not have to be cleaned. Cleanup can be a difficult job if the level of contamination is high and it is a large house. Ultimately, the property owner is responsible for the cleanup cost. Home insurance policies may cover part of the cleanup cost. There are three options a homeowner can take; decontaminate the property, demolish it or do nothing. But, if the home owner decides not to clean up the property, he may be legally responsible if people get sick after they enter a contaminated building.

According, to toxicity studies that have been done on humans and animals the chemicals used to manufacture meth can cause a range of health effects. These effects include cancer, damage to the brain, damage to the liver and kidneys, birth defects, and reproductive problems such as miscarriages.

Toxins can also be found in the water system of a property. Septic tank systems are especially vulnerable to contamination. Meth waste is often poured down sink drains and toilets. Sometimes the waste water runoff can kill vegetation, which is a sign the house was used for meth manufacturing. If toxins are found in the septic tank, the tank should be pumped out.

Cleanup can cost up to $100.000.00 or more. The walls have to be painted and sealed so the toxins cannot surface again. The carpet needs to be replaced. If there is serious contamination, everything has to be removed from the house. Some things can be cleaned, but some of them have to be disposed of as hazardous material.
Some states have laws that state owners must give full disclosure to buyers that the home or property has not been decontaminated. It seems that the old adage "Buyer Beware" is more valid than ever.

There is a website where meth lab houses are reported. Remember all houses are not reported, so you could still end up purchasing a home or property that has been used for meth manufacturing.

Butterfly Gardening: How to Plant a Butterfly Garden

A butterfly garden is one of the best ways to attract butterflies to your yard. Almost everyone enjoys the color and presence of beautiful butterflies. There are many flowers that you can plant to attract butterflies to your yard. A butterfly garden can be grown in many different designs. The size of your butterfly garden depends on the space in your yard that you want to plant it. It doesn’t have to be a lot of space, sometimes just flowers in pots will attract a fair amount of butterflies.

While butterflies do not eat in the traditional sense, they have a proboscis, or long tube in their mouth that acts like a straw for drinking. If you watch them while they are perched on a flower or melon rind, you will see them probing with something that looks almost like one of their feelers. Watch closely and you will see them stick their proboscis into the flower or melon rind and drink the nectar or liquid.

The most important part of a butterfly garden is the plants that you plant in it. Some plants attract butterflies and some don’t attract them. They really like summer lilac, daisies, Purple Coneflower, Yellow Sage, lavender, petunias, Butterfly Bush and Valerian. There is a wild milk weed that is called Butterfly weed that butterflies like, too. There are a lot of herbs that butterflies like, too.

They mostly feed on nectar from flowers but also eat tree sap, dung, pollen, or rotting fruit. They are attracted to sodium found in salt and sweat. This is why they sometimes even land on people. Sodium as well as many other minerals is vital for the butterfly’s reproduction
Butterflies love melon rinds. Just put the rinds around in your flower pots or on the ground and the butterflies will flock to it. When it gets dried out, turn it over and step on the rind and it will get mushy and easier for them to eat.

Design your garden so it has eye appeal to you, too. Use colors and plants that you like. Some people find it helpful to draw a layout of what the finished garden should like. That way they can have a plan before they start their garden. If you decide to make a large butterfly garden, you can even add gravel paths through it.

The wind can be harsh on the butterflies. It is best to plant the garden where it has a wind break from a building or taller plants. If you can, plant your butterfly garden where you can see it from a window of your home. Also, have places to sit in your garden and some of the butterflies will light on you. Butterflies are cold-blooded creatures so your garden should be in the sun for about six hours a day.

Another common butterfly behavior called puddling refers to butterflies that congregate in shallow water or wet areas to grab a drink on a warm sunny day. If there is no water available, a mud puddle can be made from mixing water and dirt. The only problem with this is the sun dries the mud puddle out so fast in the summer and it becomes hard.

The caterpillars of almost all butterflies eat various parts of plants. Each species may specialize in only a few kinds of plants or plant parts. The caterpillars of the Harvester butterfly and its relatives are exceptions in that they feed solely on aphids. It is important to find good host plants to grow in your butterfly garden that are unique to the types of butterflies that are native in your area.

Another way to attract adult butterflies to your yard is to offer places for females to lay their eggs. These are called host plants. Some females are pickier about which host to lay their eggs on than others. You will need to find out what kinds of butterflies are native to your area to know which types of host plants you will need to grow.

So have fun, plant a butterfly garden and enjoy watching the beautiful butterflies enjoy your creation.

My Kentucky Home

Kentucky is a beautiful state. Right now we have a little snow and dreary weather.  It's been cloudy all day.  Do like the sunshine a lot better.  But grateful that the roads are somewhat better.  We did have a few inches of snow but the ice was worse.  When there is ice on the road you can lose control of the car very easily. Makes you feel good when you don't have to go out to a job.

Temperatures are below freezing so the ice did not clear off the deck today.  Our deck is on the Southwest side of the house and almost unusable in the summer, it really gets hot out there, so doesn't take much to melt the ice off of it. I love to go out there and sit in the hot sun in the summer time, but I can only stay a few minutes so I don't get sunburned.

We have about 8 1/2 acres of land, with a 2160 square foot house and a 24x 20 shed on it.  We put the living room on the back of the house, with a bay window and double glass door so we can look out across the back of the property. We like to watch the birds and the neighbor's black cows.  The cows are in a field behind our house.  They have calves every year and we enjoy watching them play in the field.

Their are Mockingbirds, Sparrows, Cardinals, Yellow Finches, Blue Jays, and several other birds here.  The Mockingbirds sing so pretty. If you are out in the yard, one of them will sit not far from you and sing every song he knows. There are big black crows, we call them black chickens, they are as big as chickens.  In the summer, there are hummingbirds.  They are fun to watch but sometimes they wear you out watching them. They fight over the feeders until you wonder how any of them get enough to eat!

We really enjoy Kentucky, better than anyplace we have lived.  My husband and I were both born and raised in Illinois and then lived in Texas in the 70's.  We moved to Kentucky in 1980. So we have been here a few years.

We are not located near any big cities, just smaller ones.  We have to drive 100 miles to get to Louisville, and 65 to Bowling Green.  We did get a Wal Mart Superstore a couple of years ago and have enjoyed it being just 3 miles away. So if you are a big city person, you probably would not be happy in our little community. We like to visit the big cities a few times a year, but we are always glad to get back home.
